Guinness 250th Anniversary Stout
So Sunday’s are typically my favorite day of the week. I don’t have to climb through attics, crawl under houses or gaff up poles, it’s usually just a relaxing day. But, the best part of Sundays are the evenings. A few of my buddies get together to read through a book, often one that’s way over my head (so far over my head I refuse to read due to the fact that I can’t pronounce most of the words). While reading, we usually enjoy tobacco and beer products of all sorts.
Last night was just like any other night, we got together, started a bonfire and realized none of us brought our books! So, it just turned into a night of comradery and not so great beer. I did bring over a bottle of Pliny the Elder, which is always enjoyable, but after that we were in a rut. One of the guys brought over some Michelob Light and one brought a six pack of Guinness 250th Anniversary Ale, of course I headed straight for the Guinness!
I must admit that Guinness is not a beer that’s usually on my list of “enjoyable beers,” but it’s much lower on the list of beers I dislike than Michelob Light is! I poured the bottle into a glass and looked at it. WOW! It was dark with a tan head, no surprise here; it looked just like a typical Guinness. I then took a whiff. WOW! It smelled like Guinness; roasty, toasty and bland. The next on my list of things to do was take a drink. WOW! It tasted like a watered down version of Guinness with a bit more carbonation.
Definitely not what I expected for 250 years of brewing this antique stout. I would have expected some more flavors, maybe a bit thicker than motor oil, at least something! I got a whole lot of nothing. When one of my buddies got up to get a few more beers and asked if anybody wanted anything, I declined with the least amount of tact as possible; just as I had declined my hosts wife’s pumpkin spice cookies. NO! NO! NO!
This Sunday night was a quasi flop; beer, reading and everything else!
